5.0 out of 5 stars Painfully amazing, September 1, 2007

We bought this for our Rat Terrier. He's very smart and was learning all his basic commands but not "Come". When he got lose he refused to come when you called him. I worried about his safety. With the kids in and out of the house all summer, something needed to be done. As a animal lover I was really torn about the idea of a "shock" collar. What sold me was that this one could be set low and could also be used with a "beep". It only took him three times before he got it. The first time he left the yard I called him, he did the typical "Ha-yeah right", and took off! I gave him the command "Come Cosmo!" and then zapped him. He did yelp, I won't lie:-( He stopped and started to take off again, I repeated. He came running to me. I praised him and gave him treats. Next time I "beeped" him first with the command, followed by a second beep (still didn't come) then a zap, then he came...more praise. Last time I just "beeped" him and he came instantly!!. Now he wears it and we... Read more

I have owned dogs and been with dogs since birth. The majority of these wonderful animals have been pets, but I have also spent years working with hunting dogs; raising, training and working with. Until recently I have always been rather smug, and must admit to having done a bit of bragging that I have never had a dog or known a dog that I could not train. Now of the literally hundreds of animals I have been in contact with and worked with over the years this has been true. In addition I can truthfully say I have never hit a dog, lost my temper with a dog, and other than firm voice command and gentle authoritarian use of a leash, used any other training aid. I had very mixed emotions and must admit to have had strong reservations in using such a device as being reviewed here. I have had friend who have had excellent results with their hunting animals with the use of "shock collars," and swear by them, but still and all.....

Well enter Ivan (as in Ivan the Terrible)... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for us!, March 30, 2007
This review is from: PetSafe Deluxe Little-Dog Remote Trainer for Pets Under 40 Pounds, PDLDT-305 (Misc.)
We have a 2.5 year old jack russell mix who weighs 25 pounds. Some of the behavioral problems we have with her are whining for no reason, barking at every little thing that moves outside, jumping on people, and not understanding the boundaries of our yard. (We normally have her tied up if she is outside or take her on a leash, but sometimes it's nice to have her loose in the yard if she would stay there).

It took us a little bit to get used to the sensitivity (or lack thereof) of the buttons on the remote. You have to push them in all the way for them to do what they are supposed to; otherwise, the light on the remote may light up, but nothing happens. We maybe use the electric button twice a week. After the first time or two, she understood what the beep meant. Now, when she hears the beep, she immediately stops what she's doing 99% of the time. The other 1%, the beep will get followed by the electric button. Definitely read the directions; you do not need to hurt... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't worry about the batteries, July 29, 2009
This review is from: Elite Little Dog In-Ground Fence Receiver Collar (Misc.)
Though I agree with the other reviewers that battery life is short on this collar, it is nonetheless an extraordinary system! We have 2 beagles who are escape artists and rather stubborn and this system works fantastic for them! Training was a breeze - both dogs figured it out quickly, even when we extended their area after 4 months of use. It's been now about 7 months that we have the system and couldn't be happier! We can rest assured that our pets are safe when we are away at work during the day.

For the batteries - I read about this trick. Reuse the battery casing and just remove the little battery that is inside. I get replacements online for 4 batteries including shipping for about $8. That is a sweet deal! Look for "3V Lithium Battery 2L76 CR1/3 N 1/3N" batteries - you can find them as cheap as $1.50 a piece. I simply removed the little plastic ringlet on the bottom of the casing that kept the battery in place, removed the battery, inserted the new one, and... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars The Most Expensive Collar You Will Ever Buy, April 14, 2007
This review is from: Elite Little Dog In-Ground Fence Receiver Collar (Misc.)
The collar has a great design and worked great on our small dog for about a month; however, the company placed a flashing light on the model which eats the battery in about a month. The replacement batteries are specially made by the company to fit the collar and run about $10.00. Therefore, once you buy the collar to keep the collar operating for your dog you are looking at spending about $120 a year. The company has a slightly larger collar that does not have the flashing light that we use on our other small dog. Those batteries are also specially made by the company, but the battery lasts quite some time (over a year). Although our other dog is bright and once he got popped a time or two does not come near the boundaries. I wish I would have never bought this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars eats an $8 battery each month, November 30, 2007

Mike L (concord, nc USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elite Little Dog In-Ground Fence Receiver Collar (Misc.)
I've had one of these on our little dog for 3 months now and have gone through 3 batteries. The dog gets close enough to the fence to make the collar beep maybe once a week at the most, and the dog is smart so it has only been shocked a couple of times.

You've been warned.. if you buy one of these you'll most likely be spending $100/year on batteries. You can hack the little battery holder apart and put in a standard CR-1/3N battery and save about $2/month, but it's not easy cutting the battery holder apart. I'm looking for a small 3v rechargeable battery I can sneak in there.

Petsafe.. recall these.

This unit worked well the first 14 days. Enough for the box to be thrown out! Then the vibration mode went out. Then the battery wouldn't even last 1 day. Then it stopped working. Don't waste your money.

Works well, it keeps the dog in the yard. At least till he learns to run past the boundry before the collar has time to react.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product not as described, August 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence Collar - PRF-275-19 (Misc.)
The collar in itself is a wonderful product. However, when reading the product description, it mentions that it comes with short and long probes. This is not true. We received our collar and it was only the short probes. We needed the long ones which is why I specifically made sure it said it came with both. It is a good thing we still had our old collar and could use the probes from it. I am a stickler for the product being exactly what is described!! Since that was not the case, I cannot promote it as a good product as it is misleading.
